City of Trogir

City of Trogir
In 1997, UNESCO included the city of Trogir on its prestigious World Heritage List, and in 2016 it was declared the most beautiful island city in the world by National Geographic magazine.
Trogir's history goes back a long way. Its core was founded in the 3rd century BC by Greek colonists, and the city has been influenced by various cultures over the centuries, from the Romans and Byzantines to the Venetian Republic.
This rich heritage is evident in the city's architecture, which harmoniously combines elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles.

History of the city
Already during the Roman Empire, Trogir was recognized as an oasis of peace, and many Romans built their villas in the city. Emperor Claudius settled his war veterans in Trogir.
Trogir, whose urban life dates back to the time of the Greek colonization of the Adriatic, and which, as a medieval commune, achieved exceptional cultural achievements, possesses an exceptionally rich cultural and historical heritage about which much has been written and discussed.

However, it should be emphasized that the problems of medieval and late medieval Trogir have attracted the most attention of the professional public. This is, admittedly, a period of exceptional cultural and artistic achievements of the Trogir commune, but one of the key reasons for such a successful development of the city lies precisely in the rich ancient background and its long-lasting influence on the spiritual life of the city in later periods. Compared to other coastal cities that rest on an ancient core, the material remains of the ancient heritage of Trogir are relatively modest.

Cultural and artistic achievements

As part of the Trogir Cultural Summer, numerous musical evenings, theater performances, folk festivals, fishermen's nights, folklore festivals and other interesting events are held. The event "The Valuable Hands of the Coast, Hinterland and Škoja - from Kairos to Today" includes the presentation and promotion of indigenous products, traditional crafts and folklore heritage.
